Homewood, AL
Homewood is a city in southeastern Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is a suburb of Birmingham, located on the other side of Red Mountain due south of the city center.
The first settlers of the area which would eventually become Homewood arrived in the early 1800s. The area's population, however, did not grow significantly until Birmingham suffered a major cholera epidemic in 1873 (See Timeline of Birmingham, Alabama).
Edgewood saw the greatest amount of development. The community contained an Electric Railway leading to downtown Birmingham by 1911 and a man-made lake by 1915. The lake was created by the construction of a dam along Shades Creek near Columbiana Road. Two parallel roads were graded on either side of the lake to create a race track around the lake, however these plans never came to fruition. The roads eventually became Lakeshore Drive and South Lakeshore Drive.
The city's major industries include healthcare, education, and retail. Homewood is strategically positioned within the Birmingham metropolitan area, contributing to its economic growth and cultural richness. The city's commitment to education is evident through its well-regarded school system, attracting families seeking a high-quality learning environment.
In terms of health and wellness, Homewood places a strong emphasis on community well-being. The Brookwood Baptist Medical Center, a prominent healthcare facility in the region, serves the residents with comprehensive medical services. Additionally, Homewood boasts several parks and recreational areas, promoting an active lifestyle. The Homewood Health Center provides resources and support for residents seeking to enhance their well-being. The city's commitment to both physical and mental health contributes to the overall quality of life for its residents by having wellness centers, such as the Vitalogy Wellness & Med Spa offers a range of spa treatments focused on relaxation and well-being.
