Gadsden, AL

Gadsden is a city in and the county seat of Etowah County in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is located on the Coosa River about 56 miles (90 km) northeast of Birmingham and 90 miles (140 km) southwest of Chattanooga, Tennessee. It is the primary city of the Gadsden Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 103,931. In the 19th century, Gadsden was Alabama's second-most important center of commerce and industry, trailing only the seaport of Mobile. The two cities were important shipping centers: Gadsden for riverboats and Mobile for international trade.

From the late 19th century through the 1980s, Gadsden was a center of heavy industry, including the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and Republic Steel. In 1991, following more than a decade of sharp decline in industry, Gadsden was awarded the honor of All-America City by the National Civic League.

The first substantial European-American settlement in the area that developed as Gadsden was a village called "Double Springs". It was founded in about 1825 by John Riley, a mixed-race American Indian and European-American settler who built his house near two springs. Riley used his house for a stagecoach stop on the Huntsville-to-Rome route. The original building still stands as the oldest in Gadsden.

Gadsden has been a hub for industries such as steel production, textiles, and manufacturing, contributing significantly to the region's economic vitality. Today, Gadsden continues to evolve, blending its industrial heritage with a growing emphasis on cultural diversity and recreational opportunities.

Health and wellness are paramount in Gadsden, with the Riverview Regional Medical Center serving as a cornerstone for comprehensive healthcare services. The city prioritizes community well-being, offering residents access to parks, fitness centers, and wellness programs such as the Bodyworks Fitness & Spa, a fitness center with various workout equipment, classes, and spa services for relaxation and rejuvenation. YMCA of the Coosa Valley offers fitness classes, swimming pools, gym facilities, and wellness programs for all ages. The Retreat Day Spa provides spa services including massages, facials, and body treatments for relaxation and wellness. FAQs

What is Gadsden, AL famous for?

In the 19th century, Gadsden was Alabama's second-most important center of commerce and industry, trailing only the seaport of Mobile. The two cities were important shipping centers: Gadsden for riverboats and Mobile for international trade. From the late 19th century through the 1980s, Gadsden was a center of heavy industry, including the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and Republic Steel. In 1991, following more than a decade of sharp decline in industry, Gadsden was awarded the honor of All-America City by the National Civic League.

Why is Gadsden, AL called Rainbow City?

Rainbow City was named after the U.S. Highway 411, called Rainbow Drive, which runs through the middle of our city. Some of our older citizens say it was named after Alabama's Rainbow Division that fought in World War I. Hernando DeSoto’s troops were the first visitors to the area in 1540 and today a bridge now stands where the Pensacola Trading Path crosses the Coosa River. A paved highway now traces the trail that was cut from Nashville to Horseshoe Bend by Andrew “Old Hickory'' Jackson on his way to fight the Creek Indians in a battle known today as the Battle of Horseshoe Bend.

Why is it called Gadsden, AL?

Some modern versions of the flag include an apostrophe. The flag is named for Christopher Gadsden, a South Carolina delegate to the Continental Congress and brigadier general in the Continental Army who designed the flag in 1775 during the American Revolution. He gave the flag to Commodore Esek Hopkins, and it was unfurled on the main mast of Hopkins's flagship USS Alfred on December 20, 1775.
