FAQs:

What is Tarot Card Reading?

Tarot card reading is a form of cartomancy whereby practitioners use tarot cards to purportedly gain insight into the past, present, or future. They formulate a question, then draw cards to interpret them for this end. A traditional tarot deck consists of 78 cards, which can be split into two groups, the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana. French-suited playing cards can also be used; as can any card system with suits assigned to identifiable elements (e.g., air, earth, fire, water).

What is the Purpose of a Tarot Card Reading Session?

Tarot card reading should not be used as just a method for predicting the future. Tarot card reading helps us understand our mistakes and provides confirmation when we are on the right path.   Additionally, it also helps us gain a bird’s eye view perspective as well as a deeper understanding of issues when we are facing issues in our relationships, career, money, or health.

While future forecasts and prophecy are generally what people look forward to when they go for a tarot card reading session, the core and power of the Tarot exist in guidance. The goal is to gain some real understanding and awareness of the basic karmic themes, life lessons, and experiences that are defining, influencing, or repeating in our current lives.

What provides us the transformation we want from a Tarot reading is the guidance and wisdom, which then enables us to shift from the state of powerless victim mindset, which is based on fear, disillusionment, and uncertainty, to a state of increased awareness, mental clarity, and spiritual consciousness, where we feel encouraged to make empowered and well-guided changes and adjustments in our lives.

What is the Major and Minor Arcana?

There are two types of cards in the usual tarot deck and they are known as the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana.

The Minor Arcana is a set of cards that are very much like the standard playing cards we use. It consists of four suits, namely Wans, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles. Each of these suits contains ten cards that are numbered from 1 to 10. Face cards are also present in each of the suits which are known as the Page, Knight, Queen, and King.

The Major Arcana are solo cards that hold very distinct meanings. Some of the cards present in the Major Arcana deck are the Devil, Strength, The Hanged Man, the Fool, and Death.

What Are Tarot Spreads?

A tarot card spread refers to the specific pattern or layout that the cards follow after being drawn from a deck during a reading. Different spreads can be used to answer any number of questions you might have in your life. They are particularly helpful for looking at a specific situation or a specific question from many different angles, which is why they are an important part of every practitioner’s spiritual growth.

By using a particular tarot spread, you can gain insight and clarity into a situation without the bias that often comes with self-reflection. The design itself already suggests what each card represents, so it avoids any confusion. If you’re looking for some answers about finding love in your life or securing the job you want, there are individual tarot spreads you can use.

How Do Tarot Readings Work?

Tarot readings work by the reader interpreting the symbolism of the tarot cards to gain insights into your life.

The interpretation of the cards is based on their position in the reading, as well as their traditional meaning. The steps in every reading are  as follows:

- The reader will shuffle the deck of tarot cards and ask you to choose a card.

- The reader will then lay out the cards in a specific pattern called a spread.

- The reader will interpret the meaning of the cards based on their position in the spread, as well as their traditional meaning.

What is the Significance of Tarot Card Reading?

Tarot readings help a person understand what he or she needs to know about a particular situation. Decks are best used as a tool of inner wisdom and guidance, as readings give a person insight into past, current, and future events based on the person's current path at the time of the reading. The cards do not necessarily reveal what will happen, but instead, allow a person to gain an understanding of a situation and determine the best course of action based on what is known and what the cards show.

What Kinds of Questions are Good to Ask Tarot Cards?

You can ask the tarot cards for just about anything! That is the beauty of the tarot. Tarot cards don’t judge like doctors, psychics, and professional readers have heard it all, so don’t worry about how your questions sound. You can ask broad questions such as What does my future hold?

Or you can ask more focused, specific questions. Such as What the next two months look like in my career.

You could ask your cards yes or no questions, but you probably want more information than just a simple yes or no answer. So be mindful of how you phrase your tarot questions.

The same can be said of asking a “when” question. You may want to ask something like When am I going to find true love?

But you finding true love is part of a bigger picture in your life. The timing of true love can be affected by many factors in your life. Such as personal issues you need to work on first, for example. So the simple “when” question may need to be elaborated on when you ask it.

How Often Should One Read Tarot Cards?

A good rule of thumb for getting a reading by a professional is one per season. You could certainly get a reading every month or as little as annually, but a good frequency is every 3 months. However, your reading could be done daily or even multiple times per day.

Getting your Tarot reading is all about connection, reflection, awareness, and action. A psychic (tarot reader) can connect with you and provide information about what’s going on in your life.

Reading can be very personal, but only so many things change in your life and it’s not worth the cost to pay for reading too frequently.

If you want to connect with your intuition and spirituality, then you may want to purchase your Tarot cards and work with them to develop your psychic abilities.

How Accurate Is Tarot Card Reading?

A real tarot reader never guarantees any future outcome. Tarot cards are just a tool that guides you to a better path after deep analysis by the reader. Also, there are different readings like love readings, spiritual readings, and so on. However, tarot readings must not be confused with psychic readings, fortune telling, past life readings, and numerology readings, as they are very different.  Another important thing is having the right mindset while going for a session. Your positive energy assists the reader in making accurate predictions. Also, the readers can give you valuable feedback through spiritual readings. However, the predictions also depend upon your current state. Sometimes, a person is more receptive to tarot readings depending on their emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical state. You won’t always get a reading at full efficiency.

What is the Difference Between Tarot and Cartomancy?

Cartomancy is the act of using a 52-card playing deck as a divinatory tool. Playing card decks are used for parlor and casino games such as Hearts or Blackjack. The only difference between playing cards and tarot is that the 78-card tarot card deck has only one use: to give tarot readings.

Regarding the layout of the two decks, there are a few key differences. A tarot deck consists of two sections: the 22-card Major Arcana and the 56-card Minor Arcana. And interestingly enough, the Minor Arcana resembles that of a traditional playing card deck.

How so? Well, both tarot decks and playing card decks have four suits. They both have a 1 - 10 numbered system—with Aces representing the first number. And they also both have a court card system. The only difference between the two is that tarot cards have gendered Jacks (female and male). That’s why this section has 56 cards, as opposed to 52.

One amazing thing about cartomancy is that it’s a great way to sneakily read cards to a skeptic. A person who has never used tarot would be much more likely to “get their fortune read” by someone using a deck they’re very familiar with. This can put your querent completely at ease, without having to pull out special tricks or stops.

A Brief History of Tarot

The history of tarot is somewhat shrouded in mystery, but it is believed that the earliest tarot decks originated in Italy in the 15th century. These early decks were used for playing card games and were similar to modern playing cards.

Over time, the tarot began to be used for divination and spiritual purposes. Mystical and occult teachings were added to the decks, and the images on the cards became more symbolic and allegorical.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the tarot was popularized by occultists and mystics, and it began to be used as a tool for divination and self-discovery. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the tarot became popular among the Theosophists and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

In the 20th century, the tarot experienced a resurgence in popularity, especially in the New Age and metaphysical communities. There are many different tarot decks available today, and the tarot is used for a wide range of purposes, including self-discovery, spiritual growth, and divination.

Today tarot is considered a tool of divination and self-improvement, with many people seeking answers and guidance by using tarot cards. With the different types of tarot decks, spreads, and interpretations; Tarot is becoming more and more popular among the public.

Amazing Benefits of Tarot Card Reading

Tarot card reading is an amazing concept in use in the world for the betterment of humanity. It serves to predict the future of people and tell them about some things that are unknown to them. A tarot is a pack of cards and the reading of these cards are referred to as tarot card reading. Tarot card reading can help you lead a happy life by revealing to you all the inner secrets of life.

1. Clarity in life

If there is one thing that can help you provide deep insights into your life and provide a better clarity level then that thing is tarot card reading. You gain a new perspective on life and develop a better understanding and knowledge.

2. Focus on improvement areas

Nobody is born perfect. We all have some personality traits that prevent us from achieving perfection in life. No matter how successful you are, there is always room for improvement. Tarot card reading is an ideal way of picking the areas needed for improvement and working on them to seek perfection.

3. Peace

If you are among those who keep pondering over their negatives and struggles rather than enjoying some positive things then tarot card reading is perfect for you. It helps you find inner peace by overcoming feelings of anxiousness, fear, and worry. It also helps overcome struggles thereby achieving peace.

4. Decision making

Are you battling with whether to take a particular decision or not? If yes then try out tarot card reading. It is perfect for you as it helps to decide the perfect path for you. It does not predict the future or tell which path to take. It can, however, bring new insights into life and help in arriving at a promising decision.

5. Improvement in life

If you are thinking of transforming your life then contact an astrologer and opt for a tarot card reading. Tarot card reading is an excellent opportunity to start a fresh new life. Tarot reading helps diagnose those aspects of your personality that need nurturing and therefore helps you to become a better person.

6. Nurturing relationships

Tarot card reading helps do away with all negative energy and fills a person with positive energy to induce him to take risks. It can help create and nurture harmonious relationships with others and helps in taking risks.

How to Learn Tarot Card Reading

Tarot reading for beginners is not rocket science. If you have any doubts, myths, or fears about tarot, let go of all of those before you start. Remember that it is one of the safest aspects of occult sciences. So, tarot is not going to cause you any harm.

The first thing you have to do is get a good deck of cards. The Rider-Waite-Smith is the most popular deck of cards, but there’s no limit to how many sets of cards you can have. But if you are a beginner who is just starting, it’s best to have the traditional deck with 78 cards, with full illustrations, just so that you get the hang of it.

Here’s how you can read tarot cards on your own:

1. Before you spread out the deck, start by meditating and connecting with your subconscious, to establish a connection with the cards.

2. Keep your questions simple and frame them in a way that is easy to understand.

3. Now ask your question and shuffle your deck, while also meditating for the best-suited card to come up.

4. You can stop anytime when you feel you are ready and pull out a card. Sometimes when you are shuffling, cards fall out on their own too.

5. The card might either come upright, or reversed, and they both have different meanings and interpretations.

Now that you have pulled a card, here comes the most important part – interpreting it. Look at the image carefully and see what it speaks to you. If you need further clarification, you can always refer to the guidebook as to what the card means, or pull out another card to get more clarity.

How to Read Tarot Using Playing Cards

You’ll notice that a deck of cards contains 52 cards, as opposed to the 78 cards of a tarot deck. So when you’re reading with a playing deck, there are no corresponding cards for the major arcana or the knights of each suit. That being said, for the remaining cards, there are quite a lot of similarities.

1. Hearts > Cups > Water > Correspond to matters of the heart, dreams, emotions, and relationships

2. Spades > Swords > Air > Relate to the intellectual realm, logic, how we think and communicate with others

3. Diamonds > Pentacles > Earth > This is easy to remember since diamonds come from the earth! These correspond to matters of heart and home, your health, and things of the material world

4. Clubs > Wands > Fire > These are the action suit, and relates to moving and doing things, but also creativity, passion, and inspiration

The court cards of each suit are also very similar, and you’ll find that there are jacks that represent pages, as well as queens and kings. You will also notice that the numbers within a playing deck are the same as the tarot deck. You’ll start with an ace, have 1-10, and then three court cards instead of four (no knight). The numbers of playing decks are the same as they would be in your tarot deck, so you’ll interpret them just as you would normally in a reading. Most playing cards also come with a joker, which you can decide whether to use or not. If you do, it will take the place of the Fool from the tarot.

Next, you’ll just need to shuffle your deck, and start reading! Using the cards for a tarot reading is easy and a lot of fun. Plus you’ll be strengthening your intuition as you learn to make new associations with the cards.

Four Popular Tarot Spreads You Can Use

There are many different types of tarot spreads that you can use, ranging from the simplest to the most complicated. Before you try those fancy card spreads and immerse yourself in their intricate meanings, I encourage you to start with these four beginner-level tarot spreads to get your feet wet.

1. Meditation Card

Out of all the tarot spreads, this is probably the easiest to work with because it uses just one card. I found this extremely helpful when I was just learning about tarot reading. I still do because I’ve incorporated it into my morning ritual, and it helps me get through the rest of my day with clarity and purpose. To use this for your morning meditation, close your eyes and take a deep breath first. Then, shuffle the cards and pick one that “calls out” to you. Clear your mind and gaze at the image for about 10 minutes. Try not to depend too much on the standard meaning of the card and acknowledge whatever advice or inspiration comes to you.

2. Three-Card Spread

This is another popular spread I love to work with because it’s very straightforward in its linear design. The three cards you pull from the deck can offer different ways of looking at a given situation. Most practitioners gravitate toward the past-present-future approach, while others use it to examine their situation, action, and outcome. Draw three cards from the deck and lay each one from left to right. Then, sequentially uncover the meaning, very much like getting from point A to point B. If you’re pressed for time, and you want to do a quick, condensed reading, I highly recommend the three-card spread. You can also use it for advice on your current path, strengths, and weaknesses.

3. Relationship Spread

Probably one of the most utilized tarot spreads is the relationship spread. It’s mainly because human connections are such an integral part of human existence that many people often seek advice on how to improve them. Also known as the love spread, this specific layout examines how strong a relationship is or how happy you are with the other person. Arrange the cards in the form of an inverted V, placing the first card on the bottom left, then moving up to reach the apex until you lay the final card on the bottom right.

4. Career Spread

Another common tarot spread is the career spread because a huge chunk of our lives is spent on earning a living or putting our efforts into a specific profession. You may be wondering whether it’s time to find a new job or choose an entirely new path. Lay the cards in the shape of a horseshoe, placing the first card on the top left, then moving down to reach the middle curve until you lay the final card on the top right.

Best Time To Do a Tarot Reading

First thing first, never ignore the peace of your mind. The perfect time to read tarot cards is when you are at peace. No reading will work out until you are calm.

It is so because emotional imbalance strips off the accuracy of your reading. Experts recommend developing a bond with your tarot deck and doing readings for yourself. Why?

Because tarot mirrors your intuition and helps you grow wisdom! You can also consult a professional. But, your energy for readings is incomparable to anyone.

Here is a list of the best moments to take a tarot reading.

- Before making any major decision.

- When you want to explore your potential.

- When you want to bring out a new part of yourself.

- When you feel lost and need direction.

- When you need relationship advice.

- When making necessary business plans.

- When life hits you hard.

- When you need confirmation.

- When you need to get rid of negativity.

What to Expect in a Tarot Card Reading Session

If you’ve heard a lot about Tarot and are intrigued by the thought of scheduling a session for yourself, we’ll help you have a clear understanding of what you can realistically expect from a tarot card reading session, to avoid being let down & be able to achieve the maximum benefit from your tarot card reading session.

1. Your tarot reader is working in this field because they genuinely want to help people. Therefore, rest assured that they are there with a genuine intention to guide you.

2. The tarot reader will probably explain how they read the card because each reader has a different way of reading the cards and will respond to any queries you have if you are completely new to tarot card reading.

3. Since the relationship between the reader and you, is similar to that of a therapist and client, it is always advised that you discuss your problem in detail with the tarot reader. The reader cannot assist you unless you are honest and willing to speak about your problem.

4. You’ll feel at ease sharing your situation with the reader because they too are human beings and are generally one of the most non-judgmental people you’ll meet.

5. To enhance your chance of receiving the most precise advice in a Tarot card reading, it is crucial to ask concise, straightforward questions. Avoid asking too abstract questions.

6. Be aware that a tarot card reading may reveal information that you don’t really want to hear, but that the universe wants you to know. When you ask for assistance, keep in mind that you are doing so because you require an unbiased perspective.

7. Avoid asking Yes or No questions because the guidance you receive is based on the energies around you and generally it’s more like advice and less about yes or no.

8. Do not ask questions about someone else’s life in a tarot card reading session, unless and until it’s affecting you and/or you have their permission, as it is considered an unethical practice.

9. Wait patiently for the reader to respond to you after pulling a card. Receiving messages intuitively and communicating those messages to the querent (client), which takes time, is the foundation of proper and accurate guidance.

10. Your information will be kept confidential, and you will be treated with the utmost respect, warmth, and care.

11. If anything unfavorable comes up in the tarot card reading, your reader will help you come up with solutions, as a result of which you’ll leave with a sense of strength and empowerment.

12. Getting a tarot card reading will not miraculously fix any issues or reverse any circumstances you might be in, but it can assist by providing a broader, overall picture and clarity about key influences, incidents, and themes influencing specific aspects of your life, like relationships or career at a given time, as well as the potential outcomes.

13. A Tarot card reading session can be very beneficial to provide a deeper understanding of the most significant present and future karmic and spiritual lessons that will determine your fate and the direction of your life, as well as advice on how to be best equipped to overcome them.

14. No Tarot card reading, no matter how accurate, is intended to be interpreted as anything set in stone or as a way to deny you the freedom and power to alter the direction of your life, if you would like to make a change.

How Tarot Predictions are Made

If you ask a Tarot reader, they will agree to the fact that no absolute predictions can be made about the occurrences in a person’s future. The future is always subject to change.

When tarot cards are interpreted, the person or ‘subject’ becomes aware of the paths they are most likely to follow or a series of possible outcomes of a decision, they might make. It is only supposed to equip the subject with extra information so that they are capable of making an informed choice for themselves.

While giving a reading, the tarot reader starts by taking a series of cards from the deck and placing them in an arrangement known as a spread. The cards in a spread are each interpreted based on their position in the chosen deck and their face value.

The two major spreads that are most commonly used are the Celtic cross and The Three Fates.

The Celtic cross is a ten-card spread. It depicts elements such as our influences in the past and the future, hopes for ourselves as well as conflicts in inspiration.

The three fates are a spread with three cards. The three cards represent our past, present, and future respectively. There are many other three-card spreads, and three fates are just one of them.

The other spreads of this category might cover three completely different aspects such as a person’s current situation, their obstacle, and how to overcome it.

How to Read Tarot Cards for Yourself

For those who are completely new to tarot, here is an easy, step-by-step way to get started:

1. Clear your mind and relax.

2. Focus on the question or situation you want answers on or advice about.

3. While focusing on the question, shuffle the cards.

4. When you have finished shuffling (this will depend on when you “feel” that the cards have been shuffled long enough), pick your cards by the number of questions you have. For example, if you have three questions, you will draw three cards—one for each question.

5. Read them one by one, and receive your answer. Don’t worry if you are unfamiliar with the card meanings. Most decks come with a guidebook that can help you!

9 Tips For Choosing A Great Tarot Reader

1. Learn About The Tarot Reader

Read the Tarot reader’s About page. What’s their Tarot reading style? Are they intuitive, practical, predictive, or spiritual? Are they straight to the point or do they like to weave long stories about the cards? What Tarot deck do they use? Do they consider themselves counselors, predictors, spiritual guides, or otherwise? What’s their philosophy on the Tarot and how it works?

2. Find A Personal Connection

It’s hard to know if you have a personal connection with a Tarot reader until you have had a reading with them. However, you can often get a sense of whether you connect by reading their profile, looking at a photo of them, exploring their website, and perhaps even asking them a question or two before your reading.

3. Get The Details

If you’re about to purchase a one-card Tarot reading, are you going to get a couple of keywords or a decent-sized reading on that one card? And if you fork out $100 for a 12-card Tarot spread, are you going to get a detailed interpretation of each card? Find out exactly what you’re paying for. How long will the reading be? How many Tarot cards will be drawn? Will the reader discuss each Tarot card?

4. Read Testimonials, Feedback, And Reviews

Most good readers are happy to share client testimonials and feedback about their Tarot reading services. Even better are those readers who request your direct feedback immediately after a Tarot reading as it is a sign that they care about your satisfaction.

5. Look For Tarot Certification, Association, And Experience

Some professional Tarot readers choose to become certified with titles such as “Certified Biddy Tarot Advisor” or “Certified Tarot Master”. Keep in mind though that certification is a personal choice, so an accurate professional Tarot reader will not always be certified. And look at the reader’s experience. How long have they been reading? What other related skills do they have? Do they teach Tarot or blog about it?

6. Ask For Sample Tarot Readings

The best way to know if a reader’s style is right for you is to view a sample Tarot reading. Now, there aren’t many readers that do this yet, but there’s no harm in asking. A sample Tarot reading will show you how the reader interprets the cards, what length a typical reading is, what style the Tarot reader uses, etc.

7. Check The Fine Print

Unfortunately, there are a lot of psychic scams that offer a free Tarot reading or a low-cost reading, only for you to find out that to get the insight you need, you have to pay a huge sum of money. Or, you may be strongly encouraged to make a second purchase after your reading, such as having to buy a spell to remove negative energy. So, check the fine print and make sure you know what you’re getting in for.

8. Look For A Code Of Ethics

Ethical Tarot readers will have their own Code of Ethics or a list of boundaries around when they will and won’t read the Tarot cards. Often it involves not reading for third parties who haven’t provided their permission, not reading on medical, legal, or financial issues, and not reading for minors.

9. Stick Within Your Budget

Most good Tarot readers charge a reasonable fee – around $70 to $90 per hour is common. More ‘famous’ readers charge a higher rate, and while you may be happy to give over your cash for a reading, make sure you know what you’re getting into first.
