According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 88.0 square miles (228 km2), of which 86.2 square miles (223 km2) is land and 1.8 square miles (4.7 km2) (2.05%) is water.

According to the Trewartha climate classification system, Coolbaugh Township has a Temperate Continental climate (Dc) with warm summers (b), cold winters (o), and year-around precipitation (Dcbo).
